A long-serving landlady who knows all the answers has called time after 14 years in charge of a village pub.
The wind of changing is blowing through Liss village centre as Sheryl McCormick is leaving The Whistlestop.
The village centre pub has been transformed since her name first appeared above the door in 2010.
The watering hole has a thriving social scene and weekly calendar with quizzes, themed nights and competitions like a meat draw and ‘pennies for pints’.
But as any publican will tell you, there’s not often time to relax with Sheryl now after a well-earned break.
Sheryl said: “I’ve loved it and I’m going to be really sad to go.
“I’ve got nothing planned for the moment, but I’m hoping to go on holiday for the first time in 12 years and then I’ll see what happens during the summer.”
There’s been plenty of “lasts” recently with Sheryl being presented with a “greatest quizmaster” glass on May 1 after leading her last pub quiz.
Mrs McCormick will hand over the keys this Tuesday, May 7, to a temporary landlord with a view to making the position permanent. Her loyal staff will remain while no other changes are likely, as they don’t want to tinker with a winning formula.
She said: “The thing I’m most proud of is turning this pub into a friendly, welcoming place where all the community can engage, as when I started here in 2010 no-one really came her. It’s just grown and grown.”
