PUPILS at Bohunt School in Liphook have been interacting with scientists from across the UK in an online public engagement event aimed at getting students excited about science.

‘I’m a Scientist, Get Me Out Of Here’ event saw students putting scientists through their paces through online live chats in which they could ask the experts about anything, from climate change to coding.

The aim of the event was to get students excited about science. Students see that scientists are normal people, learn that science lessons relate to real life, and become more enthused about science subjects.

‘I’m a Scientist, Get Me Out Of Here’ is funded principally by the Wellcome Trust, an independent global charitable foundation dedicated to improving health.

Additional funders for ‘I’m a Scientist, Get Me Out Of Here’ included The Royal Society of Chemistry and The Physiological Society.

Bohunt headteacher Neil Strowger said: “We have a culture of innovation at Bohunt and projects like this are incredibly valuable.

“Not only did this experiment show students how excitement about subjects extends beyond the classroom but it gave them the opportunity to improve attitudes and communication skills.

“At Bohunt, we work incredibly hard to offer students the chance to expand their experiences with industry experts and the chance to speak to real, live scientists was unforgettable.”

Stratianna Davi, a science teacher at Bohunt School, said: “It was fantastic that Bohunt School students had the chance to meet scientists online who deeply believe in the research they are conducting, who devote their lives to the endless pursuit of discovery with little or no chance of scientific or social recognition.

“I am enormously pleased with the event as my students understood that the most difficult thing in science is to develop a firm belief that the chances of discovering something as wondrous as the structure of the DNA are minimal but not zero.”
