A Bordon pensioner facing a £6,000 vet’s bill after his dog was struck by an electric scooter in a hit-and-run has hailed well-wishers for their “amazing” generosity.
Mr Williams and his ten-year-old chihuahua, Digby, had an awful end to 2024 as the dog was left with a broken ankle following a collision last Sunday lunchtime (Dec 29).
His elderly owner – who was using a walker – was also nearly knocked over by one of three youths riding an electric scooter in the woods north of Park Street.
He said: “We were walking back when three kids on scooters almost knocked me over and hurt Digby - they didn’t stop.”
The incident left Mike shaken and Digby unable to walk but the pensioner’s friends and neighbours, Wendy Sargent and Sue Bexon, came to their aid.
The trio have praised Amery Vets for their help as the dog is now on painkillers while a splint is supporting his heavily bandaged leg.
But £6,000 of surgery is needed and with Mike on state pension and unable to pay for insurance, Wendy leapt into action by launching a GoFundMe appeal.
And despite happening just days after Christmas, well-wishers have dug deep with nearly £2,700 donated at the time of writing.
“The total we’re looking to raise is around £5-6k because it’s quite intricate surgery but I couldn’t believe how much was donated so soon,” said Wendy.
“I had one guy knock on my door and gave £108 to help with the vets. I’ve been absolutely gobsmacked and the people in this community have been so amazing.”
“It’s been absolutely amazing but so have these two,” said Mike in thanking Wendy and Sue.
“I couldn’t have done anything without them because I can’t walk and need the help.”
