SHOPPERS in Bordon have reacted with dismay to the prospect of losing one of its major retailers.

It was business as usual at Wilko this week with the doors remaining firmly open at the Forest Centre store.

But dark clouds are looming over the retailer nationally with the popular chain going into administration.

The firm has more than 400 branches around the UK and employs more than 12,000 people nationally. 

Talks are taking place between the homes store and potential buyers with employees waiting nervously for the outcome.

Some 14 stores are set for closure but that decision was made before last week’s announcement.

Many people already believe the Bordon, Aldershot and Woking shops are closing as some websites have posted unhelpful lists of every ‘affected’ Wilko branch. 

But they are nothing more than a clickbait list of every Wilko store with no closures confirmed as yet.

Shoppers outside the Bordon store last Friday spoke of their disappointment at the possible loss and hope administrators find a way to keep the retailer going. 

“I worry about the people who work here and hope they keep their job,” said Natalie Drayton, on her way to Lidl.

Rachel Varney from Whitehill, who bought some detergent in the store, said: “I pop in here most weeks to get something – it’s a good shop.

“It would be a shame if it left and I’m not sure what would replace it as it’s quite big.”

Pensioner Les Wood added: “It would be a big loss if it closed – this place often feels quiet as it is.”

The Bordon branch opened around 15 years ago with the building forming the final piece of The Forest Centre development. 

Staff at the branch were unable to comment but a spokesperson said: “No closures have been announced and all stores remain open as usual.”
