A family has paid tribute to a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was heavily involved in the Petersfield community.
Robert Simmons, known as Bob, passed away on December 3, 2024, aged 99. He lived in Petersfield for around 25 years and became an active member in a variety of organisations and events.
He started a painting group through u3a, belonged also to a music appreciation society and was a member of a church watch group.
In WWll, Bob served in the Navy and after the end of the war he commanded a minesweeper. He met his wife Pam through the Navy, she was a WRNS officer.
Bob’s daughter, Bridget Lawrence, said: “He was really a man who got to people's hearts and I've had so many people say to me how special he was.
“He was a good artist and always enjoyed doing various paintings, mainly of ships, because of his time in the Navy.”
Using his artistic skills, Bob painted the backdrop for the St Peter’s Church nativity scene which featured angels flying overhead. The backdrop has been displayed every Christmas for the last few years and will stay in place for the memorial service.
Bob’s favourite pastime was to make models of historic ships with six sitting proudly atop his shelves at home with the largest taking pride of place at his grandson-in-law's home office.
Alongside his paintings, Bob would provide them to The Rosemary Foundation’s fundraising events. He was always a staunch supporter of the hospice and when he was 90-years-old, Bob flew a WWII Auster aircraft to raise money for the foundation, in acknowledgement and as thanks for the care that both he and Pam received.
Bridget added: “They cared for my mum in the months before she died and he kept up his connection with them right until he died.”
A celebration of Bob’s life will take place on Wednesday, January 8 at midday at St Peter’s Church in Petersfield. Family flowers only, donations if desired for The Rosemary Foundation by cheque, payable to the charity c/o Michael Miller and Partners. Alternatively, donations can be made online at www.michaelmiller.co.uk, search Simmons.
