Doris Spong, a long-term Petersfield resident and stalwart of many local organisations, has died aged 95.
Portsmouth-born Doris settled in Grange Road in the late 1940s with her husband Peter, who had been badly injured in the war.
He ran Spong & Travers bookmakers in the High Street, while Doris ran the Red Lion pub in West Meon, and then the Jolly Sailor in Petersfield.
She was Petersfield British Legion women’s section president for many years, attending the town’s Remembrance Day parade well into her old age.
She was an active Women’s Fellowship member, and a long- serving Petersfield Hospital shop volunteer.
Despite living with Parkinson’s Disease, she retained the warmth, charm and wonderful humour that won her so many cherished friendships.
The couple moved to Grenehurst Way in 1988, and after Peter died in 1999, Doris remained there until her final days.
She leaves children Rosemary, Jenny, Jeff, Christine and Nick, 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
There will be a service at St Peter’s on Friday (October 1) at 12.30pm.
Donations can be made to the Friends of Petersfield Hospital.
