Motorists who parked illegally on a Petersfield side street on Bank Holiday Monday have only themselves to blame for getting ticketed.

That seems to be the view of Hampshire County Council as 15 vehicles parked on the northern side of St Peter’s Road were ticketed during the day.

Some motorists have called for clearer warning notices as there is no single line on the M&S side of the street aside from vehicle access markings.

There have also been claims that some of the yellow restriction signs are obscured, while others thought that Sunday rules applied because of the bank holiday.

But they didn’t and motorists could have saved themselves the fine and the risk – especially as the town’s EHDC-run car parks were free to use on the day.

“St Peter’s Road is part of a restricted parking zone, which is in force between Monday and Saturday, 8am to 6pm, including Bank Holidays,” said a spokesperson for HCC.

“There are signs at the entrances and throughout the zone informing motorists about the restrictions in place.”

The road has become a hotspot for ticketing since HCC took over civil enforcement duties from East Hampshire District Council last April.

There has also been an upturn in ticketing in Liss village centre recently due to persistent illegal parking on the double yellows by the Whistle Stop and misuse of the disabled space on Lower Mead.

The council has encouraged people to report parking issues via www.hants.gov.uk/transport/parking as they will increase patrols if there’s a rise in complaints.
