ROYAL Surrey County Hospital has been celebrating National Play in Hospital Week with fun and games on its children’s ward.

Organised by the National Association of Health Play Specialists and Starlight Children’s Foundation, the week aims to raise awareness of the benefits of play in the treatment of poorly children.

Royal Surrey’s play specialist, Alan Ford, works alongside doctors and nurses and uses play as a therapeutic tool, which includes preparing children for theatre.

Alan said: “Coming into hospital can be very daunting for a child, not only are they unwell but they are also away from their familiar surroundings.

“Play is a normal part of children’s lives and is crucial to the care we offer our young patients. We provide therapeutic and stimulating activities to ensure that their stay in hospital is as comfortable as possible.”

Carys, seven, joined the Trust’s chief executive in the hospital’s playroom after being bought to Royal Surrey following an asthma attack.

She said: “I have been in hospital for the whole night. I love playing in the playroom. I love drawing and colouring. ”

Chief executive of the Guildford Hospital Paula Head, added: “I was delighted to be able to join Carys in the playroom and show my support for national play in hospital week.

“The initiative reminds us of the importance of supporting our very young patients and also celebrates the vital role that stuff, such as Alan, play.”
