Local artist Nick McMillen is displaying his work in an exhibition entitled Beneath The Canopy at Gilbert White’s House and Gardens in Selborne until March 30.
A spokesperson for Gilbert White’s House said: “Nick’s artistic journey unfolds through a tapestry of outdoor experiences and a profound connection to nature, which fits perfectly into the ethos of Gilbert White, the 18th-century naturalist.
“With an education focused on art and design, coupled with an extensive foundation in land management, conservation and rural crafts education, Nick has honed a diverse skill set over many years that mirrors the landscapes he’s traversed.
“His drawings are a response to these experiences, spending years observing woodland and rural flora.”
Nick is displaying an array of charcoal works. He told the Herald: “One of the aspects I appreciate about charcoal is its simplicity, which immediately guides the type of drawing I create. Charcoal’s organic nature, originating from the earth and returning to it, adds to its appeal.”
Nick usually exhibits in London so he was excited to show his art near his Hampshire home.
Recent exhibitions include ones for the Society of Botanical Arts and the Society of Graphic Fine Art.
In May 2024 he was given the Cockpit Arts Basket Makers award, funded by the Worshipful Company of Basket Makers, and in August 2024 his drawing Liberty – Castanea sativa was acquired by the Shirley Sherwood collection.
Nick’s concern for nature inspires his drawings. He said: “Two quotes resonate with me: David Attenborough's reminder that we protect what we care about, and Robin Wall Kimmerer's idea that paying attention is a form of reciprocity with the living world.
“Through my art and craftsmanship, I hope to inspire a deeper connection to nature and a sense of responsibility for its preservation.”
