A neuroscientist from Farnham has released a self-help book that he claims can help readers beat addictions and improve their mental health.

TJ Power launched The DOSE Effect, based on his own journey of recovery from addiction, at an event in London last week.

His story is one of resilience, having battled addictions to alcohol, pornography, smartphone use in his youth.

The loss of five close friends between the ages of 16 and 21 threw him into a deep spiral of grief and substance abuse, but he has since reclaimed his life using principles outlined in his book.

“I was drunk all the time,” he said. “I’d scroll through social media from the moment I woke up, unable to contemplate a second without distraction from screens or music.”

TJ credits his transformation to his understanding of the brain's natural chemicals and their power to change lives.

He recovered and went on to become a lecturer in psychology at the University of Exeter, before co-founding Neurify, an organisation that brings neuroscience-based teachings to improve mental health for adults and children.

The book’s title, The DOSE Effect, refers to four key chemicals in the brain - dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins - that play a critical role in motivation, mood, energy, stress, and our connections with others.

TJ believes one can leverage these chemicals to improve well-being and have a healthier and happier mind.

“My new book offers a groundbreaking approach to overcoming modern mental health challenges,” he said.

TJ said reading The DOSE Effect can help equip readers with the knowledge and skills to thrive, offering strategies to build resilience, cope with stress and feel more fulfilled.

TJ has already gained significant recognition for his innovative approach to mental health, particularly in the face of today’s digital distractions. His strategies have been successfully implemented in major organisations, including Coca-Cola and the NHS.

In addition, Weydon School in Farnham has partnered with TJ and his girlfriend, Georgia, a clinical nutritionist, to run interactive workshops for Year 7 to Year 10 students.

These sessions focus on the impact of the four chemicals, teaching young people how to boost their health and well-being in a fun and engaging way.

The book is currently on sale at Waterstones in Lion and Lamb Yard, Farnham at half price.
