PETERSFIELD’S golfing community is mourning the death of former club stalwart Brenda Upfold at the age of 93.
Mrs Upfold was still playing golf in her early 80s, having taken up the sport in the 1960s when Petersfield Golf Club was based on The Heath.
She had two stints as ladies’ captain at the club, spent several years as ladies’ secretary, and also worked as PGC’s assistant secretary.
Born in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Brenda moved to Petersfield in 1952 after her marriage to John Upfold.
The couple first lived in Sheet, then The Avenue in Petersfield, before moving in retirement to Long Down on Herne Farm.
John Upfold, who died in 2010 aged 80, was a well-known local architect, JP and member of many organisations in Petersfield.
He was also a keen golfer himself, and played a leading role in the club’s move in 1997 from The Heath to its current home in Tankerdale Lane between Liss and Petersfield.
One highlight of Mrs Upfold’s golfing career was a hole-in-one at the 13th on the old Heath course in 1991.
She also enjoyed hockey and tennis, and swam, dived and played football competitively during her teenage years in Abergavenny.
Mrs Upfold’s working career included a lengthy spell at Meon Travel/Longshot Golf in Petersfield High Street.
She spent the last three years of her life at Pax Hill Care Home in Bentley, near Alton.
Mrs Upfold leaves two sons, Tony and Jonathan, three grandchildren, Georgie, Toby, and Christopher, and great-grandson Dexter.
Her funeral will take place at 2.30pm on Friday, December 16, at The Oaks Crematorium, Bartons Road, Havant.
