A GLASS has been raised in memory of a late sportsman, bellringer and Harrow drinker following his passing in California.
Former Petersfield United player Peter Shinn was 90 when he recently died from a short illness.
The dedicated Pompey fan is remembered fondly by his lifelong friend and Chapel Street resident, Haden Dodd, whose family have run the Harrow for many years.
Peter passed the 11 Plus to go to Churchers College and played both rugby and cricket. But his first sporting love was football and he joined the Petersfield Youth Club Old Boys team that met on the fields of Oaklands Road.
He turned out regularly with local lads Jacob Stubbington, John Cowdrey, Bill Triggs and Alan Bridgers and often played table tennis at the Drill Hall.
Peter emigrated to Canada to work for an oil company and married, but enjoyed returning to Steep for soup at The Harrow, bellringing at St Peter’s and the occasional Pompey match.
Peter settled in the San Francisco Bay area of the States. He leaves a wife Mildred, a son and daughter and two grandsons.
* The shorter version of this story which appeared in last week’s Post wrongly stated the Dodds family once run the Harrow pub in Steep, but of course, they continue to do so. Apologies for the family for the error.
