As the seasons change, so do the colours we choose to wear. Our vibrant coloured nails, makeup and clothes become deeper with autumnal tones, and our skin also changes with the change in seasons.

Tans fade, our summer glow fades from our complexion and our skin gets drier.

Finding the best colours and tones for your skin type will enhance your beauty and make your skin appear healthy and vibrant.

Firstly, know if you have a blue or yellow undertone. A blue base has more pink and blue undertones. A yellow base has more yellow and peach undertones. These are also known as ‘cool’ (blue) and ‘warm’ (yellow) skin tones.

There is also a neutral undertone, where you won’t be able to see a distinctive tone within the skin.

The best place to tell what undertone you have is looking at your wrist. If your skin is on the pale side, stick to cool and neutral products.

If you’re using products which are too warm for your skin, they will appear too strong on the skin.

However, on the eyes, you can play with different tones. Warmer eyeshadow colours will work; however, rosy-pink toned palettes will make the eyes pop.

If you have a neutral complexion they’ll have similar effects as each other.

However, if your skin has more of a ‘blue’ base, lean towards neutral and pink-toned palettes.

If you have medium, tanned or olive skin tones, stay away from cool-toned products. This could leave an ashy appearance and look ‘grey’ on your skin.

If this is something you’ve experienced before it’s a good way to tell if you’ve been using the wrong bronzer for your undertone. or if you’ve not realised this is because of the undertone of your skin.

On the eyes, play around with browns, coppers, oranges and other autumnal colours.

Any colour with a red base to it will help emphasis your eyes.

Again, stay away from greys or neutral tones if you’re finding it’s not looking right on your skin and leaving an ashy colour.

For deeper skin tones, deep browns and reds will best complement your skin.

Avoid neutral and grey shades if your skin has a yellow base. Copper, burgundy and reds can create a warm appearance to the skin. They can also bring back that radiant, glowing appearance to the skin which fades as the temperature drops and summer tans fade.

Bright oranges and reds for blush can also bring a glow to the cheeks.

Generally speaking, if you have a warm undertone, you’ll look great in warm colours.

However, if you have a cool undertone, don’t feel restricted to just cool colours.

I personally have a neutral, borderline cool undertone to my skin – but still wear warmer tones.

I always recommend choosing your foundation based on your undertone as it can look like the wrong colour match for you otherwise.

But experiment elsewhere with colour!
