Spire Clare Park Hospital has become the first in the South of England to offer VELYS robotic-assisted surgery for total knee replacements.
The advanced technology used by the private hospital, based near Crondall, enables surgeons to create tailored surgical plans based on each patient’s anatomy.
A robotic arm helps guide the surgeon during the procedure, aiming to improve accuracy, preserve healthy bone, and potentially speed up recovery.
Zu Nawaz, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, carried out the hospital’s first procedure using the system.
“VELYS proves how intra-operative interaction between technology and the surgeon results in an amazing synergy that is clearly massively beneficial towards patients,” said Mr Nawaz.
“A shout out to deputy team who supported me and my team through the whole process and cases – incredibly knowledgeable and useful throughout.”
Hospital director Rachel Williams added: “It is a really exciting day for our hospital, consultants and the teams supporting the introduction of this cutting-edge technology which will allow us to deliver the best possible outcomes for our knee replacement patients.”

Four consultants at the hospital are now trained in the technique, as part of Spire Clare Park’s ongoing investment in orthopaedic innovation.
