A guardian angel has highlighted the importance of first aid training after saving the life of a Farnham man.

Vanessa Knight gave lifesaving CPR to a man who stopped breathing just yards from his front door last Friday lunchtime.

The 31-year-old from Bordon put the victim in the recovery position, gave chest compressions and helped paramedics during the harrowing incident on Tilford Road.

The victim – a married father of two who is believed to have suffered from heart problems – thankfully resumed breathing and was later taken to Frimley Park Hospital for treatment and recovery.

Vanessa was in the right place, at the right time, as she’s a former police officer who knows first aid.

“I was driving down the road when I saw this crowd of people and a man lying face down,” said Vanessa, who works for Guardian Angels carers in Crondall.

“I asked what happened and said ‘you need to roll him over’ but they told me not to touch him.

“He wasn’t breathing so I gave chest compressions until the paramedics arrived. It carried on for about ten minutes and when they got here I helped them, getting things in and out of the ambulance.

“I had to get stuck in but it’s the first time I’ve had to do it. I was in a little bit of a shock afterwards but I didn’t struggle and I felt like I was in my element.”

The victim’s wife has since been in touch and has thanked Vanessa for her actions, with the lifesaver keen for more people to get essential first aid training.

She said: “I don’t know what would have happened if I wasn’t there but I think it shows how important it is to know first aid because you might need to use it one day.”
