Lloyds and Halifax are set to close 40 bank branches in England and Wales, starting in April and carrying on through into June this year.

Aldershot's Halifax branch, the bank's closest branch to Farnham, is included on the list of impending branch closures.

But the Lloyds branches in Farnham, Godalming, Liphook, Petersfield, Waterlooville, Fleet and Farnborough, and Halifax branches in Guildford, Farnborough and Waterlooville are unaffected.

Nationally, Lloyds Banking Group, which owns both banks, is to close 18 Halifax sites and 22 Lloyds branches.

This adds to the 64 closures that have been announced since the beginning of the year, with Barclays and TSB saying they will shut 24 sites between them.

Aldershot's Halifax branch on Union Street is set to close on April 26.

There has been a raft of bank closures across the area in recent years, with Lloyds closing Haslemere's last remaining bank branch and Barclays closing its Alton branch in 2021, and HSBC closing its Petersfield and Farnham branches last year, and set to close its Alton branch this April.

Natwest in Farnham also closed last year, and there are fears that Lloyds could also pull out of the town after plans to convert its historic branch in Castle Street into a boutique hotel surfaced late last year.

This has since been disputed by Lloyds, however, which said in a statement in December: "It’s our intention to keep a branch in Farnham and we’re waiting for further information following the landlord’s planning application.”
