It’s a debate that’s almost as old as Petersfield itself: is The Square one way or not?

It’s prompted many an argument or a reaction, especially if someone – the sheer cheek of it – drives anti-clockwise from Sheep Street to St Peter’s Road.

But if you’re such a person then you’re actually not doing anything wrong as the one-way system was never made official by Hampshire County Council.

The council has confirmed that no Traffic Regulation Order has ever been in place for The Square.

The appearance of the previous ‘no entry’ markings by the Post Office were probably down to Petersfield Town Council to encourage safe and effective circulation.

But the question about its legality often pops up and the Post sought a statement from the council early this year when traders discussed road markings ahead of the resurfacing of the High Street and Chapel Street.

County councillor, Rob Mocatta, told the group that ‘no entry’ markings wouldn’t be written at the anti-clockwise entry to The Square as it’s never been official, with HCC backing up his claim.

“There is no traffic regulation order in place to enforce a one-way system in Petersfield Square,” said a spokesperson for Hampshire County Council.

“Therefore, the no entry road marking near the Post Office will not be repainted.”

The plot thickened after the first resurfacing was completed in March with ‘no entry’ being repainted, in contradiction to the council’s previous statement.

But that was a mistake and after a quick removal – prompted by an email from the Post – and a second resurfacing, it’s now definitely one way or another around King Billy and his surrounding thoroughfares.

However, online maps clearly show a one-way system and its doubtful motorists will defy convention and break the habit of a lifetime.
