Work has finally begun on converting a former bank into Petersfield’s new police station.
Having swapped their former home on St Peter’s Road for Penns Place, it’s now confirmed that officers will be beating a path back to the town centre.
People will get chance to say ‘ello, ello’ to officers early next year if plans run to schedule, with lease issues preventing work from beginning earlier.
Hampshire Police & Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has confirmed the new “police base” in the former Barclay’s unit on The Square will have a front counter, giving the public the chance to report a crime, get updates on a case or seek advice, in person.
Work began last week with Mrs Jones hailing the start date as “an important day for the people of Petersfield” and for the future of policing in the town.
She added: “People in Petersfield have told me they want their police force to be more visible and more accessible.
“This is a landmark day for the community. I’m delighted work is starting on the building and I’m looking forward to watching it transform over the coming months.”
Chief Constable Scott Chilton said he was equally pleased that work is beginning.
He said: “Being in the heart of our local communities is crucial, and having a new permanent base in Petersfield town centre is just the latest step in our plans.”
* Meanwhile, police have asked anyone who was affected or abused by an alleged drunk who was arrested on Wednesday (August 28) on The Square to get in touch.
A 35-year-old who was seen acting suspiciously became threatening and abusive to the public around 1pm. He was arrested on suspicion of several public order offences and being drunk and disorderly.
Investigations are continuing, witnesses should call 101 quoting 44240369094.
