Hampshire police could soon be beating a permanent path back to Alton as part of a phased roll-out.
But it looks like a front counter service is being considered for the town instead of a new police station.
Hampshire’s Police & Crime Commissioner recently confirmed that renovation work is due to begin next month on Petersfield’s new police station on The Square.
Donna Jones announced plans last September for a phased opening of new police stations and front counters around Hampshire with Cowes, Park Gate and Portsmouth central – which were all previously closed – being among the first.
The Petersfield station is also part of phase one but her office has confirmed the second “will include a number of sites, such as Alton and Eastleigh, where there is a need for a front counter.”
There will also be a front counter at the Petersfield station with the PCC finally completing the purchase of the former Barclay’s unit. Planning permission to convert the building has been granted with the station scheduled to open to the public early next year.
Mrs Jones said: “I’m delighted that the new police station is on its way for the people of Petersfield.
“The new base will have a front counter so people will be able to come in and report a crime, get updates or simply get advice and reassurance on any concerns they may have.
“This new base will not only boost police visibility but it will further support victims of crime and enable swifter justice.”
