A meeting to give Waverley residents the lowdown on contentious plans by Farnborough Airport to double its number of flights will take place next week.

The Farnborough Noise Group will give people an update on the airport’s possible expansion and what changes to flight paths could mean for people in Farnham, Haslemere and afar as Petersfield and the Rother Valley.

The meeting, which will begin at 7.30pm next Thursday (January 16) at ZERO’s base at 168 Guildford High Street, comes ahead of a crunch decision by Rushmoor Borough Council.

The airport wants to grow the number of flights to 70,000 per year by 2040, insisting the expansion will fuel growth, create jobs and secure its long-term future.

But anti-expansion campaigners and environmentalists are vehemently opposed, saying the proposals will lead to a doubling of commercial flights by 2030.

And that will mean new flightpaths with concerns about additional noise, pollution and a drop in property prices.

Campaigners have stressed to people with concerns the importance of speaking out, saying that other threats are on the radar from Gatwick Airport expansion to the Labour government’s “growth at all costs” policy.

Plans by the former are in consultation while the latter’s plans to double the number of UK commercial flights by 2030 will mean denser flightpaths over the region.

“This will also mean more night flights and holding stacks at 3,000ft over places like Petersfield and Farnham,” said campaigner, Colin Shearn.

“The impact of these decisions will be felt by future generations in terms of pollution and climate change but more immediately in house prices and noise disturbance.”

The FGN will give a summary before fielding questions at the Guildford meeting.
