PLANS to create more parking at Petersfield station could be taken to the next level.
Senior project manager of South Western Railways car parking enhancement programme Jeff Rose has notified Petersfield Town Council of the intent to build a car parking deck at the station.
In a letter he indicated if funding were available, a first-storey parking deck above the car park off Frenchmans Road could be built.
He said: "I’m given to understand there might be the possible opportunity to move relatively quickly to secure the additional parking at Petersfield through an elevated parking deck over the existing car park.
"We will shortly be looking into the technical aspects of achieving this type of installation, along with an indicative budget necessary to do so."
It is thought funding for the much-needed car park could come from developers’ contributions, and that if planning permission were granted, construction work could start around 2020.
Partnership spokesman Mark Miller said: "Car parking is in short supply at Petersfield station, especially during the week when the existing car parks are used by commuters.
"But I would like to see SWR consult with residents and the town council before any designs are finalised."
In 2017 SWR pledged to increase car parking by 1,500 spaces across its network area when it was granted the seven-year franchise for the Southern region.
Petersfield Town Development Committee is due to discuss Mr Rose’s letter at its meeting at 3pm in the town hall today (Friday, March 1).
