MOTOCROSS has been a popular off-road sport since the 1920s and the Hampshrie Downs have provided a number of well-used venues, including Oxenbourne Farm at East Meon.

Hundreds of spectators gathered on the valley side to watch skilled riders negotiate the slopes at speed but, judging by the number of people in shirtsleeves, at least the weather was dry.

Post reader Ron Stone, who lives at Alton but spent much of his life in West Meon, wanted to share his picture, which he describes as a ‘blast from the past’.

“It should bring back happy memories for many,” he added.

The rider in the foreground of the photograph, who can just be seen climbing the hill, is Ray Marsh, who rode for Tew’s, of Petersfield.
