As Doctor Who celebrates 20 years since its 2005 revival, this week’s Peeps takes a nostalgic journey back even further to 1985, when Petersfield and its surroundings hosted the iconic Time Lord and his companion for filming scenes from the classic two-part serial Revelation of the Daleks.
Forty years ago this week, on January 7 and 8, 1985, the production team descended on Bolinge Hill Farm, Queen Elizabeth Country Park and Butser Hill, as the area doubled up as the desolate planet Necros, a fictional world devastated by famine and haunted by Davros, creator of the Doctor's deadliest enemies, the Daleks.
The winter of 1984/85 was particularly cold and snowy, especially in Hampshire, and the serial’s chilling plot was complemented by the frosty countryside locally, lending a haunting yet beautiful backdrop to the grim tale.
Revelation of the Daleks, the final serial of the show’s 22nd season, aired in March 1985. It marked Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor’s only televised encounter with the Daleks, weaving a dark narrative of genetic experiments and human-to-Dalek conversions - with Davros commandeering a funeral home to convert humans into either food for the starving or into Daleks for his new secret army.
The first scene filmed locally was at Bolinge Hill Farm, just off the A3 at Buriton, where an explosive burst of water from the pond startled both the Sixth Doctor and his companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) shortly after the Tardis’ arrival on ‘Necros’.
Nearby Butser Hill and Queen Elizabeth Country Park then became the backdrop for one of the episode’s most memorable sequences, as the Doctor and a mutant tumbled down the hillside.
As the Tardis continues its travels 40 years after Dr Who’s visit to Hampshire, Petersfield’s role in the saga remains a proud chapter in the legacy of a series that’s captivated audiences across time and space.
