THE PERSON struck by a train as it arrived at Petersfield Railway Station this afternoon has been rescued by fire crews, according to reports.
The incident began at around 1.30pm with eyewitnesses suggesting someone was struck by a Portsmouth-bound train as it arrived at the station.
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, with police, ambulance and fire crews in attendance at the incident.
The fire crew from Droxford, which was called in to cover the town’s fire station while the Petersfield crew were at the scene, tweeted: “Petersfield crew were out performing a successful rescue of a trapped passenger at the train station.”
The air ambulance was waiting at Bell Hill Recreation Ground to take the person to hospital. There are no reports currently on the condition of the person rescued.
South Western Railway are reporting that the lines through the station are now open again and the station itself has now re-opened as well. There are expected to be delays and cancellations to some services until 6pm this evening due to the knock-on effects of the line closure earlier this afternoon.
The level crossing at the station was also closed for some time with the train involved in the incident blocking the crossing.
Station Road has now re-opened to traffic, which is now flowing freely again in that part of the town centre.
Earlier Stagecoach was warning bus passengers that some services were not calling at the stops outside the station – their last update said services 91, 92 and 93 were not calling at the railway station bus stops and passengers should make their way to bus stops in the town centre.
Several schools in Petersfield issued warnings to parents about traffic congestion in the town ahead of the afternoon school run – both Churcher’s College and Herne Junior School warned parents to avoid the railway station area.
