A Petersfield project commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day has reached a significant milestone.
The Poppy Project has reached 1,000 poppies, as residents and people from as far as Winchester, come together to knit and crochet the notable flower.
The aim is to make at least 6,000 of them to cover the exterior of St Peter’s Church in Petersfield, in a waterfall effect as a backdrop for the November Remembrance service.
Speaking to the Petersfield Post, Rosemary Roberts, who founded the project with Christine Rushton, said she didn’t expect the project to reach 1,000 poppies so soon.
She added: “It has got its own momentum now, as people are so enthusiastic and it’s lovely.
“My daughter is in Winchester and her good friend does a bit of knitting and I saw her at Christmas and she said, ‘I'll knit for you’. Then she was at some meeting and she was talking to somebody and they said, ‘I'm knitting some poppies for Petersfield too’.
“My daughter-in-law in Scotland said she's going to knit some, so people are dotted about the place. Christine knitted flying across to New Zealand and is knitting while she's there, and I knitted on my cruise.”
On behalf of the project, Rosemary would like to thank everyone who has supported the venture and gotten involved.
If you would like to help, you can start knitting or crocheting and if you don’t know how, then the volunteers can show you. They meet on the third Monday of the month (except Easter Monday) from 1pm to 3pm in the meeting room at St Peter's.
In October, volunteers will be needed to help tie the poppies onto the netting for the waterfall, and the team can teach you the proper knots to secure them.
