A TIMELESS pub in Steep offers one of the world’s top 500 food experiences, according to a renowned travel guide.

Tucking into a ploughman’s lunch at The Harrow is akin to eating sushi in Tokyo or beef brisket in Texas, according to the Lonely Planet.

The pub is number 324 on the ‘Ultimate Eatlist’ put together by foodies and bloggers around the world and compiled by top chefs.

It’s one of nearly 30 eateries in the UK which has made the cut, while its position is a good 27 places higher than tucking into snail porridge at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck restaurant in Bray, Berkshire.

The Harrow’s inclusion in the guide was a complete surprise to Claire and Nisa McCutcheon, who run the picturesque pub.

“It’s pretty amazing because this is a worldwide guide,” said Claire on finding out the news.

She joked: “It will be interesting to see if we get a load of Chinese and Japanese visitors now, because there might a language barrier, but we’re thrilled to make this list.”

For anyone who has yet to try one of the world’s top 500 food experiences, the cheese ploughman’s is £7.50 while a ham and rare beef version will set you back £11.60. A Scotch egg ploughman’s is also available on Friday and Saturday.

Ingredients for the meals are locally produced and sourced.

Claire added: “The bread comes from Bread of Heaven bakery in Haslemere, the tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber come from Bryants, the beetroot comes from our garden and the ham is all home cooked.”

The award is the second major accolade The Harrow has secured in 2018 as it was named Unspoilt Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide for the fourth time.
