Mystery surrounds the death of a man in Petersfield town centre with the police keen to speak to a pair of witnesses.

A couple may hold the key to the circumstances that led to a man in his 40s being fatally injured.

The victim was seen to fall over and bang his head on the ground on Chapel Street around 1pm on Thursday, July 4.

The man subsequentially died from the injuries he sustained in the fall near the junction with Lavant Street.

The family of the victim, who is from Petersfield, have been informed with police carrying out enquiries on behalf of the coroner.

Investigating officers have appealed for two witnesses to come forward as they believe a man and a woman stopped to assist the victim immediately after his fall.

“We would like to hear from them but also want to stress that these people are not in any trouble,” said a spokesperson for Hampshire Police.

“However, we need to speak to them so that we can understand as much as possible about what happened before the man’s death.”

“Were you on Chapel Street on Thursday, July 4, at around 1pm and stopped to assist the man after he had fallen?

“Do you know anyone who this may have been? Perhaps they have mentioned the incident in passing?”
