An East Hampshire charity is hoping for a groundswell of support in its bid to nurture and save one of the country’s most beloved – but increasingly rare – creatures.

HART Wildlife Rescue has called on kind-hearted readers to give some creature comforts and sponsor a hoglet.

Hedgehogs are teetering on the verge of extinction in the UK while their offspring require round-the-clock care in the event of their mother’s death.

Rearing hoglets is labour intensive and costs £160 a time, not including staff and labour costs, so HART has appealed for a helping hand during hoglet season.

Sponsorships, which are designed to last for three months, require a minimum £30 donation but all funding will go directly towards rehabilitation.

Sponsors will also receive fortnightly email updates with information and photos of the sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs and hoglets in the centre’s care.
