OF THE handful of folk artists still playing today who fostered the genre’s resurgence in in the 1960s, few are more cherished than Archie Fisher.

So says Hambledon Folk Club organiser Mik Norman of the artist he is bringing to the village hall on Wednesday, March 8, at 8.30pm.

“Born into a singing family in Glasgow in 1939, Archie was part of the early folk revival in Scotland, playing with and inspiring among others Dave Swarbrick, Robin Williamson, Ian Campbell and Barbara Dickson,” said Mik.

“He achieved early fame with his late sister Ray on the BBC’s Hoot’nanny programme between 1962 and 1964, and over the years has become celebrated as singer, arranger, producer and composer.”

With a rich repertoire of traditional folk music as well as his own compositions, Archie’s singing is known for its lyrical qualities, while his gentle style of guitar playing suits the folk club ambience.

Added Mik:?“Archie continues to tour on both sides of the Atlantic to great acclaim – so we are fortunate indeed.”
