Time is running out for green-thinking residents of Petersfield to claim a free tree from the town council as part of a countywide scheme.

The Hampshire Forest Partnership has joined forces with Petersfield Town Council as part of a bid to plant one million trees around the county by 2050.

The front garden tree planting initiative seeks to enhance canopy cover and green corridors around the town, providing far-reaching benefits for both residents and wildlife.

The town council recognises the need to protect the local environment with the initiative aiming to enhance nature recovery whilst building environmental resilience.

“Healthy and vibrant trees are essential to Petersfield’s wellbeing,” said town mayor, Cllr JC Crissey.

“I am delighted that volunteers and Petersfield Town Council and Hampshire Forest Partnership have started this delightful initiative.”

The benefits of the more trees for the environment include enhanced nature biodiversity, cooler air and noise reduction, improved mental health and well-being.

Applicants can choose from seven native varieties like Crab Apple, Hazel and Hawthorne. There is a species guide on the Petersfield town council website and an option of initial sizes ranging from one to two metres in height.

Residents can also expect a knock on the door as tree wardens are visiting houses, dropping off flyers and answering any questions in relation to the planting initiative ahead of the September 22 deadline.
