A Petersfield group appeared on a BBC programme earlier this month after recording took place last year.

St Peter’s Church Bellringers featured on the Radio 4 programme Bells on Sunday at the early time of 5.43am on February 9.

The recording took place on August 11, 2024 at St Peter’s Church in Petersfield, of a two-minute section of a Quarter Peal of Stedman Triples, composed by Thomas Thurstans. It took 46 minutes to ring, before the evening service and Brian Underwood, tower captain and two of St Peter’s young ringers, Francesco and James were part of the band, the remaining ringers coming from outside towers.

The introduction to the ringing programme gave a brief history of St Peter’s Church, it is thought that the first church on the site was a chapel of ease for the local Manor, built in the 11th century before the establishment of the town.

The church tower was raised to its present height during the 14th century and has a ring of eight bells by various founders. The Tenor bell was cast by the Pack and Chapman foundry of Whitechapel, London in 1770. It weighs fifteen and a half hundredweight and is tuned to the note of F.

The recording of the ringing can still be listened to on BBC Sounds (search for Bells on Sunday).
