Your eyes should be your stand-out facial feature – and I’m going to be looking to make the most of them.

I’m going to cover a couple of common eye shapes now and the remainder at a later stage.

If your eye shape isn’t covered this week, and you can’t wait, take a look at the blog section on my website at www.amberrosebeauty.com for more on eye shapes.

Having an understanding of your eye shape will help you enhance your features and make the eyes appear bigger.

If you’re unsure of what eye shape you have, here are the two of the most common.

Hooded eyes (pictured top) have a pronounced brow bone and visible lid space, and as you age your eyelid space will minimise even more, creating a deeper, hooded appearance.

If you look straight at a mirror, your eyelid won’t be very visible and can be completely hidden by the crease.

As hooded eyes are prone to getting creases throughout the day, long-lasting formulas and products are the way forward.

Add a thick eyeliner across the upper lash line and a matte eyeshadow on the whole eyelid to help balance out the eyes.

If you’re wanting more of a smoky eye look, apply a darker colour to the outer corner of the lid and blend it upwards.

But a dark pigment anywhere other than the lid can make the eye look more hooded.

A light, shimmering colour in the inner corner of the eyelid will help ‘open’ up the eyes more.

If you believe you have downturned eyes (pictured below), the outer corner of the eye will turn down further than the inner corner.

If this is your eye shape, you’ll want to give the lifting effect to the outer corner. This will create the illusion of a straighter eye, and give the face a ‘lifted’ look.

To create this, bring the liner, or eyeshadow, past the eye socket and extend upwards as if you’re creating a slight winged effect.

This can be very minimal and subtle – just make sure to blend plenty.

I’d advise using a small brush to create this effect as naturally as possible.

False lashes are also a brilliant way to lift the eyes. Placing them slightly higher on the outer corner on to your eyeliner will lift up the edge of the eye, disguising that downward shape of the eye.

Lifting all your makeup around the area will give you a natural, makeup-only facelift.

Adding a wing for eyeliner will lift the eye and having an arch in your brows with the tail of the eyebrow slightly raised will also help lift the eye socket region.
