Twelve local communities will come together this month to enjoy a Christmas meal funded by a Government grant.
The Christmas Lunch Support Fund is aimed at those affected by the increased cost of living and those who might be isolated and alone over the festive period.
The grant helps community groups offer a good meal in a friendly atmosphere for people in need. It is open to all faiths and is not specifically a Christian event.
A dozen dinners will now be run by organisations across the district, from Horndean to Alton, for residents who might otherwise have had no seasonal celebration of their own.
Information on how to cope with the cost-of-living will be provided and community workers may also attend on the day to talk over any issues and offer advice.
Cllr Adeel Shah, EHDC portfolio holder for community development and engagement, said: “The grants help our local organisations provide a safe and warm place for people to enjoy a meal and, if possible, to offer useful advice and information to support people in the winter ahead.
“I am delighted that those successful will be able to provide a community event for our residents who might otherwise have spent the festive period alone.”
The funding for the scheme has been secured from Hampshire County Council and funded by the Department for Work and Pensions Household Support Fund. The Household Support Fund is set up to support households and families with the significant rise in the cost of utilities and food.
