Villagers in East Hampshire signed, sealed and delivered their farewell to a local delivery driver before he retired on Christmas Eve.

Mike Coombes has been delivering Evri parcels to Clanfield residents for years and has become the village’s favourite postie.

Evident by the number of people who gathered at The Rising Sun to give Mike a proper send off and through the retirement pot that was set up for him. Around 184 people contributed to the fund, which raised more than £2,359 and was presented to Mike at the event.

Mike said: “I knew I was appreciated, but not this much. This is absolutely amazing and I can't believe it. It has been such a surprise and it's great to feel appreciated!”

Gemma Ranson who organised the retirement fund and farewell event said that if you know Mike has got your parcel, it will get there safely.

Others in attendance said the same and shared fond memories of Mike’s deliveries. From teaching one person how to poach eggs, chasing rabbits around gardens and returning them back to their owners and more.

Clanfield resident Phill Humphries from Petersfield’s Shine Radio said to Mike: “There was one day you were delivering a parcel to our house and we weren't in. The neighbours on the left weren't in and the neighbours on the right weren't in.

“You knew who our daughter was and where she lived on the other side of Clanfield. You took our parcel and delivered it to her house where somebody was in, and it was all safe and sound. Thank you very much, Mike, we will miss you greatly.”

When asked what he does differently, Mike replied: “I've always maintained to be professional and do the best I can.”

That’s a wrap for Mike who now moves on to a new chapter in his life.
