An annual event will return to Petersfield this weekend as part of an old Twelfth Night celebration.

This year’s ‘Wassailing in the Orchard’ will take place on Sunday, January 19 at the Petersfield Community Garden from 2pm.

Attendees can expect to sing with the Petersfield Community Choir, dance away with the Mafficking Border Morris group and have a good cheer around the bonfire. The event is free for everyone and bringing your own songs to sing is encouraged!

According to the National Trust, Wassailing dates back to the 17th century and is about ensuring a good harvest by pleasing the spirits. Today, celebrations involve a procession through an orchard like Petersfield’s event, but can differ slightly depending on the area.
