Generations combined to have fun planting trees at Shalden Recreation Ground for The Queen’s Green Canopy project.
Shalden village residents teamed up with children from the Beehive Montessori Pre-school for the event funded by the Woodland Trust.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is an exciting project designed to mark her Platinum Jubilee last year. Shalden Parish Council successfully applied for more than 100 tiny saplings.
Parents and carers of the children, and pre-school staff, were among the volunteers. Young and old eagerly set to work digging holes and planting baby trees along the public footpath. The hedgerow saplings were a range of native trees – hawthorn, rowan, blackthorn, silver birch, hazel and sessile oak.
A spokesperson said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for local residents and children to connect and share stories of gardening and predictions of how the saplings will grow.
“It was a lovely morning where participants felt happy to be actively involved in a long-term environmental project.
“Perhaps in 70 years’ time one of the children will be able to bring their grandchildren on a visit to Shalden and say ‘I helped plant these trees’.”
