Bordon Petanque Club (BPC) hosted a major Southern Counties Petanque Association (SCPA) competition.
BPC was established more than 25 years ago and is based at the Bordon & Oakhanger Sports Club. It is one of 20 clubs who belong to the SCPA, whose governing body is Petanque England (PE) – which is made up of 18 regions.
The competition involved 12 triple teams competing for rankings when representing the region in the Inter-Regional Championship in Pakefield, Suffolk, in September.
The Inter-Regional Championship is the highlight of the year for many players, bringing together around 1,000 players for an intensive weekend.
PE regions enter eight teams for the championship and/or four teams for the challenge.
The weather was changeable over the weekend at BPC, with thunder and lightning stopping play on the Saturday.
However, the sun did come out and everyone carried on.
Several BPC members came to spectate and were inspired by the quality and consistency of high level play.
The second day enjoyed better weather and the teams were geared up to secure the highest ranking they could for the September competition.
The winning team were David Cruz, Callum Lombard and Sammy Ogles from River Hamble Petanque Club. Marco Franco-Llado, Kaylee Thatcher and Steve Lombard from River Hamble finished second.
BPC’s Team Black Magic came sixth. Lesley Crofts, Leo Black and James Ellis were thrilled at achieving such a level, having performed consistently well over both days.
All 12 teams will travel as a squad to represent the southern region in September.
