PETERSFIELD Bowls and Snooker Club achieved an impressive cup double when winning the Holbrook Cup against Liphook.
The final was played at Stedham, who arrange the annual competition, and it is named after the late Commander Norman Holbrook, the first submariner to be awarded the Victoria Cross, who lived in Stedham and donated the cup to the bowls club.
The format is three mixed triples, consisting of 18 ends, with the result being the overall aggregate score of all three games.
Petersfield were able to field a strong side, but they did not get off to a good start.
Petersfield recovered well though and Margaret and Robert Hutchinson and David Spandley fought back to win 19-11.
Shirley and Malcolm Paton and Steve Dearlove lost 23-11, which meant that Petersfield were four shots down overall and the result depended on the outcome of the final triple involving Richard Purchase, Paul Beverley and Ann Pedder.
With one end to play Liphook held a one shot overall lead of 49-48, so Petersfield needed two shots to win.
Purchase, Beverley and Pedder all produced a good bowl, which enabled the required two shots to be obtained and so win the Holbrook Cup by one shot.
This was the same margin by which Petersfield won the Hunter Cup a few weeks ago.
Captain Margaret Hutchinson was thrilled and delighted with the win and praised Liphook for the fine spirit in which the final was played, and Stedham Bowls Club for organising the day.
