Farnham drew away at Chipstead in Division Two of the Surrey Championship on Saturday.
Farnham were put into bat after losing the toss. Farnham lost two quick wickets in the first six overs, despite Russell Golding and Dan Wakely managing to get a couple of early boundaries away.
Chipstead’s bowlers built up pressure through consistent bowling. Harry Morrogh fell shortly after drinks, and Tom Grimes fell for a well made 25. This brought Farnham’s overseas player Jason Grozdanovski to the crease. He hit an array of shots to put the Chipstead bowlers under pressure. Grozdanovski’s impressive innings of 68, with help from Peter Brown (30), allowed Farnham to get to 188 all out.
Chipstead’s response with the bat got off to an excellent start. Grozdanovski and James Berry bowled a relentless line and length, with Berry getting the vital wicket of Denis Smith for 62.
With Chipstead on 123 for two with plenty of overs to spare, Farnham were under the pump. Accurate bowling from left-arm spinners Jake Henderson and Grozdanovski gave Farnham hope of achieving a losing draw. Brown (four for 17) and Henderson bowled well to achieve the draw.
Farnham’s second team registered their first win of the season with a crushing seven-wicket victory against Leatherhead to move off the bottom of Division Three in the Surrey Championship 2nd XI.
Andy Cullen put in a match-winning performance with the bat for Farnham with a superb 140 off 67 balls.
Stand-in Farnham skipper Ben Greenstreet won the toss and elected to bowl, backing his side to restrict Leatherhead’s batters and leave themselves with a manageable chase.
Greenstreet’s faith in his bowlers was rewarded with an early wicket as Leatherhead opener Wesley Hayes edged opening bowler Kasun Sumanasekera behind. Farnham’s seam bowling unit of Freddie Kendall, Ollie Kirkland and Haris Khan were unable to provide another breakthrough but kept the run rate tight.
Farnham remained positive and Rory Shayler had Damon Robinson caught for 36. When Kendall dismissed Nathaniel Hunter the innings was finely poised with Leatherhead on 138 for three. Matthew Evans fell for 94 as Leatherhead finished on 207 for eight from 54 overs. Sumanasekera (three for 40) was the pick of the Farnham bowlers
Opening batters Evan Mann and Khan got Farnham off to a steady start before Mann was dismissed for eight. This brought Cullen to the crease, who hit a series of crisply-timed boundaries. Khan appeared in good touch, knocking the ball around nicely before he was bowled for 31. Cullen and Daniel Jones took Farnham to the brink of victory before Cullen fell two runs short of victory, caught at deep mid-wicket attempting to end the game in style – leaving Jones to hit the winning runs.
Farnham’s third team beat Farncombe Wanderers by ten wickets in Division Seven of the I’Anson League on Saturday.
Farnham bowled the visitors out for 98, before opening batters Henry Beattie (45 not out) and Angus Watson (55 not out) knocked the runs off in 15 overs.
