Badshot Lea first team coach Victor Ocansey saw plenty of positives after his side exited the FA Cup with a 3-1 defeat at home to Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Cray Valley Paper Mills in the first qualifying round.
Goals from Adam Coombes, Danny Waldren and Hassan Ibrahiym sent the visitors through to the second qualifying round, with Derek Luzinda pulling a goal back for the Baggies in stoppage time.
The visitors took the lead in the tenth minute when Coombes’ free kick took a deflection to wrong-foot Baggies keeper Harry Cawdron and find the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
Cray Valley doubled their advantage on 66 minutes when a free kick led to a scramble and Waldren flicked the ball home from close range.
The visitors scored a third in stoppage time when Ibrahiym ran through and placed his finish past Cawdron.
The Baggies pulled a goal back when Luzinda slotted home from a Jeremy Kyezu cross.
Ocansey was happy with his side’s performance against their higher-ranked opponents, but admitted the difference between the two sides came in both boxes.
“The boys are very disappointed,” said Ocansey. “We dominated every area and element of the game and it's just a shame that both boxes have cost us.
“We didn't defend the second goal well – which came from a set piece from a wide area – and they had a free kick which was deflected in for the first goal.
“Prior to those situations happening we had good control of the ball, and slight naivety in decision making from certain players was costly.
“They're young and they're not exposed to the level, so making those mistakes is okay as long as they learn from it.
“The good thing is performances are there. We're going toe-to-toe with teams – even a team in the league above found it difficult to go up against us. There are good signs. Once we eradicate the mistakes we will be there.
“We had loads of chances, and should have put them away. We'll look at that. It's about those margins – it's something the boys have to do better.”
