A DENMEAD teenager has set his sights on the top flight after completing his first season in the Football League.

Matt Butcher is preparing to return to AFC Bournemouth as his “amazing” six-month loan spell with Yeovil Town is coming to a close.

The 19-year-old midfielder has made more than 30 league appearances for The Glovers, with highlights including a wonderstrike against Morecambe and a run out against Everton at Goodison Park. The boyhood Pompey fan expects to be loaned out again but Butcher can’t wait to carve up more defences having sharpened his skills at Huish Park.

Matt said: “I didn’t know how much I would play when I started but they’ve given me a run of 40 games so it couldn’t have gone any better. It’s been amazing and there’s no better feeling then getting on the pitch on Saturday and playing for three points.”

Matt had trials at Portsmouth and Southampton before catching the eye of a Bournemouth scout while playing for Wimbledon Park Tigers in 2010.

He joined The Cherries near the beginning of their meteoric rise through the leagues with his parents cheering him on all the way.

“They’ve made some long trips to watch me play, sometimes three times in a week,” said the former Cowplain School pupil.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Yeovil and it’s been a great experience. My hope is to break into the first team at some point but it’s all about progressing and taking a step up every year.”
