Harry Cooksley’s dramatic late winner fired Farnham Town to a 2-1 win against Ashford Town (Middlesex) and to the top of the Isthmian League South Central Division.

Owen Dean fired Farnham into an early fourth-minute lead, but Basim Mirtahmasebi’s 29th-minute equaliser looked like it might earn the visitors a share of the spoils at The Memorial Ground.

However, Cooksley stepped up to fire home a dramatic 84th-minute winner to make it five wins out of five in the league for Farnham and extend the club’s unbeaten league run to 53 games.

Farnham were quick out of the blocks and took the lead in the fourth minute when Dean wriggled past a couple of defenders before coolly slotting his finish past Ashford keeper Marcin Brzozowski into the bottom left-hand corner.

Town nearly doubled their advantage on eight minutes when a corner picked out Ryan Kinnane, but his header was cleared.

Farnham went close again on 19 minutes when Adam Liddle got in behind the Ashford defence, but his effort was cleared off the line by a backtracking Ashford defender.

The hosts created another good chance in the 27th minute when Cooksley’s corner picked out Jordan Stepney at the back post, but his header went just wide.

Ashford got themselves back on level terms two minutes later when Mirtahmasebi’s cross-shot looped over Farnham keeper Pat Nash and picked out the top left-hand corner.

The visitors had a golden chance to take the lead on 40 minutes when James King found himself free at the back post from a corner, but his close-range volley went over the bar.

Ashford created another chance two minutes later when Sam Humphreys volleyed over the bar.

Farnham nearly regained the lead just before half-time when Liddle cut inside and curled an effort towards the top right-hand corner which was superbly tipped behind by Brzozowski.

Ashford nearly took the lead four minutes into the second half when Aaron McLeish broke clear down the right and rattled a shot against the post.

Farnham went back on the attack and nearly regained the lead in the 53rd minute when Liddle’s shot was well held by Brzozowski.

The home side went close again on 69 minutes when Dean cut the ball back for Sam De St Croix, who flashed his first-time effort just over the bar.

Farnham continued to push for a winner and got the breakthrough they craved in dramatic style in the 84th minute.

Mark Waters laid the ball off for Cooksley on the edge of the box, and Cooksley fired a superb right-foot shot into the top right-hand corner to seal the three points.

Next up for Farnham is a home game against Binfield in the Isthmian League South Central Division on Tuesday, September 24 (7.45pm kick-off).
