Farnham Town Flares are gearing up to participate in a new over-45s walking football league.

The league bridges a gap in competitive opportunities for players under 50 who are transitioning from running football to walking football, enabling them to continue playing competitively while maintaining the camaraderie and enjoyment of the game.

Keith Huet, the organiser of the local walking football league run from Cove FC's ground, identified the issue after noticing that players under 50 were limited to club training sessions but excluded from official competitions.

His concern was that this lack of opportunities might deter younger veterans from taking up walking football – particularly those on the verge of retiring from running football.

Huet, who has successfully managed the ten-team walking football league for older players, decided to expand the offering, and invited local walking football clubs with younger members to join a trial tournament.

Farnham Flares joined Cove, Godalming and Yateley United for the event, which was won by Godalming.

The first season of the over-45s league is set to run from February to May.

Bracknell Town will join the competition alongside the four original teams, with space available for additional entrants.

Farnham Town Flares chairman Andy Cundy said: “This is a fantastic initiative that provides a valuable pathway for players transitioning out of veterans football.

“Walking football has grown significantly in recent years, and it’s great to see a league specifically aimed at this age group.

“The Farnham Flares are looking forward to testing themselves against strong local teams and helping to grow this format of the game.”

Huet said: “Walking football is a fantastic way for players to stay active and involved in the game, and this new league fills a much-needed gap.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the league grow and provide even more opportunities for players in this age group.”
