Petersfield Town were held to a goalless draw by second-bottom Saltdean United in the Southern Combination Football League Premier Division.

Despite the hosts residing at the wrong end of the table, they matched the Rams all over the pitch.

Saltdean nearly took the lead after 14 minutes when Billy Oliver capitalised on a defensive error and hit a shot from outside the box which cannoned off the underside of the bar, off the line and away.

Petersfield’s best chance of the first half fell to Asad Ssemwogerere.

Callum Kimber slotted him through and his first-time effort was blocked by Saltdean keeper Archie Whatman.

Dan Wood’s header was well saved by Whatman and Liam Kimber’s deflected follow-up shot fell kindly into the keeper’s hands.

Ssemwogerere had a golden chance on 70 minutes.

Kian Towse did well down the right and played a low cross to Ssemwogerere, but Whatman closed him down and smothered his shot.
