Aldershot Town manager Tommy Widdrington bemoaned his side’s defending after they fell to a 3-0 derby-day defeat at Woking in the National League.

Goals from Tariq Hinds (2) and Dan Moss in the first 18 minutes condemned the Shots to an emphatic defeat at their local rivals.

“We should have been better than what we were to defend what we had to defend in the first 20 minutes,” said Widdrington.

“That's where we let ourselves down ultimately – it was no other thing than we didn't defend our box correctly and we found ourselves with a mountain to climb.

“All teams put balls in the box, but Woking do it with long throws, goal kicks and free kicks from a long way away.

“It is part of the game – you've got to deal with it.

“I think Woking showed a little bit more maturity than us in the duals we've had to encounter and that's something our lads have to learn very quickly to manage.

“I understand the frustration of the fans because it is a local derby and they'll be getting all sorts of grief now off the people they know that support Woking.

“We have to take it on the chin.

“There's no rule in football where you can't lose a game, but the problem I've got with it is that we aided them too ably in the first 20 minutes.

“The lads who are defending the box didn't defend it well enough and if you don't defend your box in any game you're going to concede goals.

“We had enough chances and enough situations to have scored three or four goals ourselves in the second half, but make no mistake I'm humble enough to know that Woking deserved to win.

“We were thoroughly beat and we move on.”
