FOR THE second year in a row, Petersfield Rugby Club’s facilities were selected by Hampshire RFU to host all three of the county youth tournaments, starting with the under-11s.

The teams from across the county were divided into four pools of five, with only Guernsey crying off their journey due to bad weather.

Last year’s under-ten semi finalists were separated and each allocated to one of the pools, and Petersfield were one of the seeds.

Field showed they were worthy of their seeding as they won all of their pool games. Some well drilled moves and text book play rewarded Field with a 5-0 win against Fareham Heathens.

In the team’s next match, Whitear and Horsfall combined brilliantly to score the winning try against Fawley. Whitear drew his defender and chipped the ball through the defence for Horsfall to chase, and Horsfall caught up with the ball and scored.

Basingstoke put up a good fight with some tight defence and powerful attacks but Field were equally obdurate in defence and managed a breakaway for the only try of the game. In the last pool game, Trojans scored the first try of the day against Field. Field replied with two tries to win the game.

Field faced New Milton in the semi finals. Following an interception from Horsfall, Field broke through New Milton’s defence to score the first try. New Milton bounced back and scored two tries, although Field pushed the tournament winners right to the end.
