BOTH of Steep Tennis Club’s men’s teams were in action on Sunday in the Aegon team tennis event.
Steep B had a tough day, losing 6-0 away at Wyvern B.
Captain Matt Swanton and teenager Izaak Hews both lost closely-fought matches, losing their respective third set tiebreaks. Martin Evans, and Tom Foster both went down in straight sets. The doubles matches were a similar story, with both pairs losing in straight sets.
Steep A fared better against visiting team Totton, winning 4-2. Teenager Oli Fernandez had a difficult opponent in the form of Matt Whitehead, and lost 6-3, 6-0.
Captain Dave Gaterell took out Totton’s Kane Connor 7-5, 6-2. After leading 5-1 in the first set, Gaterell went off the boil for a few games, and Connor came back to 5-5. A tight couple of games saw Gaterell take the first set and he then finished off the second set in quick fashion. Philippe Mougin made short work of Reuben Manning, 6-0, 6-2, with an identical winning scoreline for Barry Carter against Peter Keating.
Fernandez and Gaterell won their doubles, giving Steep the win. Carter and Mougin had a more difficult time and went down in three sets – but Steep came away with another win.
The weekend before saw the Steep junior team of Benjy Page, Jamie Allardice, Owen Palmer and Elliot White take on Littleton, and in a reversal of fortune from the previous match Steep won 6-0.
All Steep’s teams have one match left in their leagues.
