A naturist couple from Petersfield have revealed the poignant inspiration for their naked charity walk.
Glen and Cyndi Fryer aren’t covering up their mission to walk nude and barefooted from Petersfield to Headley on June 2.
The postal workers will attempt the 14-mile walk from The Square to the naturist Haslemere Sun Club in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and Breast Cancer Now.
The pair wanted to help the good causes as some of their friends and relatives are suffering from the “horrible illnesses”. They’ve certainly got the public’s attention, with more than £1,300 already being pledged and their posters appearing prominently around the district.
My Fryer said: “Most people know someone who has had one of these cancers, you can’t get away from it.
“In our naturist club we’ve got three guys with prostate cancer and a woman close to us has got breast cancer so we thought, what could we do?”
The Fryers are no strangers to nudity as they got the nation’s media hot under the collar when they appeared on infamous Channel 5 show Naked Jungle in 2000 alongside an equally au naturale Keith Chegwin.
They’ve also taken part in naked bike rides but their walk is a first, with the pair consulting the police and fellow nude walkers beforehand.
Being naked in public is not illegal in England or Wales, but it can become an offence if a complainant can prove the nudist has “stripped off with the intention to upset and shock”. They’re not nervous about the walk, especially as the popularity of naturism seems to be rising.
Mr Fryer added: “I’ve had a policeman in the house and we’ve let them know we’re doing it, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
“I’ve also promised them we won’t go up the A3 because we don’t want to kill people.
“Some people have talked about joining us, which is nice, but it’s really just about making some money for these two charities.”
