The East Hampshire mother of a two-year-old girl who died shortly after being found in a village pond has pleaded not guilty to her murder.
Alice Mackey will stand trial in October after entering the plea at Winchester Crown Court on Monday morning (April 28).
The 42-year-old, who currently has an Oakhanger address, is accused of killing Annabel Mackey, who was reported missing from the family home in Kingsley on September 10, 2023, sparking a massive search operation.
The girl was taken to hospital in a serious condition after being found in Kingsley Pond not long after the alarm was raised but died the following afternoon.
An 18-month investigation followed with the defendant later being charged with murdering Annabel at an address in Forge Road, Kingsley, on September 11, 2023.
Mackey has been remanded in custody with a trial due to start on October 6 and a further hearing earmarked for July 28.
She was charged with murder on March 4 and spoke only to confirm her details at a previous hearing.
Annabel was a “beautiful, positive and very happy little girl,” according to her father, who released a statement through Hampshire Police shortly before Mackey was charged.
His tribute added: “She loved story time, dogs and her dolly.
"She enjoyed singing songs and nursery rhymes and had a very sweet tooth.
"Annabel loved to laugh, she brought so much happiness into our lives. She was dearly loved by her family and friends.”
Her father continues: “Thank you to everyone who was a positive influence in her life.
Please continue Annabel’s legacy by remembering her and caring for others as much as she did. The world needs more people like Annabel to spread positivity and kindness.
"Annabel, I love you so much, you are a shining star and you will be loved forever."
