A youth centre that goes well beyond providing a hangout place for Liss youngsters is opening its doors to the public.
Villagers can learn more about the amazing work of the Liss Crossover Centre during an open afternoon this Saturday.
The centre based in St Mary’s church hall is run by a mix of local volunteers and qualified and experienced youth workers.
It provides a host of activities for youngsters and teenagers ranging from table tennis, pool and board games to craft work and group discussions.
The centre has also played a big part in developing the musical ability of some local teens thanks to a worker with a passion for playing and performing. There’s a great selection of guitars, drum kits and keyboards, with some of the Crossover’s musically minded teens showcasing their skills at local festivals.
But while there’s much to admire inside the centre, their outreach work is just as remarkable as two youth workers visit the village centre twice a week to meet youngsters on their patch.
The aim is to form a trusting relationship that could aid their decision making and enhance their well-being.
Workers believe they can prevent youngsters from being drawn into anti-social behaviour and exploitation through contact and early intervention.
They also run a Level Up Project to help youngsters who are not in education, employment or training to realise their often unexplored and untapped potential.
Villagers can learn more about these schemes and others this from midday to 4pm this Saturday.
